Attractions
Once a mostly agricultural plantation community, North Charleston’s population exploded after incorporation in 1972. It is now the 3rd-largest municipality in the state and attracts over 2 million visitors per year. North Charleston is only 12 minutes from Charleston, the 2nd-largest city in South Carolina. The city includes plenty of opportunities to experience the fine arts, and the local Performing Arts Center includes the well-known North Charleston Coliseum.

 

Education
There are plenty of educational opportunities in North Charleston. Charleston County School District and Dorchester County District Two together have 17 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 high schools. Charleston offers alternative forms of education as well. There are also several award prestigious magnet schools like the Military Magnet Academy and the Charleston County School of Arts. Similarly, the Garrett Academy of Technology specializes in providing high school students skills in health science technology, electronics and refrigeration among others. Trident Technical College and Charleston Southern University are among the region’s higher education offerings.

 

Recreation
The North Charleston Coliseum houses the South Carolina Stingrays Ice Hockey team. It has also been used for professional wrestling venues and an audition arena for the reality show American Idol. There are 6 plantations and gardens in the area. One of these gardens contains the Angel Oak Tree, thought to be at least 1,500 years old. The Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is the nation’s oldest public attraction, having been open to visitors since the 1860s. It covers nearly sixty acres. Residents can also visit the Charleston Museum, the country’s first museum, to learn about the Lowcountry region and the attempts to preserve its culture and history. Finally, check out many of the splendid golf courses like the the Golf Club at Wescott Plantation.
